Abstract

It is an encouraging statement we read at intervals that effort are being made to strengthen engineering materials so that they run successfully for more and more hours. Our attempt in this short note is to add to the already existing knowledge about wear of metals. Wear has been defined as unintentional removal of materials from the surfaces of objects in relative motion. Long before anything definite was known about the process of wear it was established that friction was mainly responsible for wear. In fact most of the literature on the subject deals with “Frictional wear”. Thus far we have noted the following six types of wear that have been identified with reasonable degree of accuracy such as seizing, abrasion, scoring or cutting, galling or scuffing, spalling, pitting.
