Abstract

The paper presents the observations made on the effect of addition of inhibitors such as soluble starch, dextrin, potassium iodide, and diethylaniline and thiourea on the rate of dissolution and hydrogen pick-up by a plain carbon steel sample when pickled in sulphuric acid bath. Effects of the inhibitors on the steel having different carbon contents have also been compared. Inhibitors diethylaniline and dextrin have been found satisfactory in inhibiting metal dissolution and hydrogen pick-up in all the three types of steel studied. Starch is found to be unsuitable in mild steel but acts most efficiently on medium and high carbon-steel. (Messrs J. Konar, Senior Scientific Assistant and N.G.
