Abstract

An investigation on the pre-reduction of pellets of manganese ore intimately mixed with coke powder (from 70% to 125% of the stoichio etric amount required) was made. The pellets were.fired at 800, 900, 1000 and 1100°C and the firing time for each composition was varied between 15 and 120 minutes. These were subjected to chemical and X-ray analyses and microscopic studies in order to find out the amount and types of different phases present in the pre-reduced pellets. The reduced pellets were also tested for their porosity and compression strength. This internal reduction of the pellets resulted in maximum porosity and minimum crushing strength-many times less than externally reduced pellets.
