Abstract
Ferrofluids are suspensions of magnetic nanoparticles which have both magnetic and liquid-like properties. These are synthesized by co-precipitation methods in the presen-ce of a surfactant and the size of iron oxide particles is in the 5-10nm range. We have synthesized water based ferrofluid at ambient conditions, Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) used as surfactant, sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide as oxidizing agents. Polyvinyl alcohol controls the size and shape of iron oxide particles and also prevents agglomeration of particles. The nanofluid was characterized using DLS, XRD, FTIR and Confocal laser scanning microscope, these nano-particles have varied applications in the biomedical industry.
