Abstract
The evidence of iron in ancient India today weighs heavily in favour of its indigenous origin. It is clearly borne out by an examination of literary, archaeological and metallurgical data on the subject. The metallurgical skill shows clear-cut phases of technological evolution as is evident in furnace design. The technological growth appea-rs to be inter-related with socio-economic and cultural upsurgence.
