Abstract

Al-2Si alloy is subjected to equal channel angular press-ing (ECAP) at 298K. The mechanical properties are evalu-ated using conventional mechanical tests and the results are compared with the results obtained by using ball inden-tation technique (BIT). ECAP results a drastic reduction in grain size as compared to the as cast Al-2Si alloy. A continuous decrease in grain size is observed from a ingle pass to multiple pass samples. The grain size of single pass sample showed an average grain size of ~1 µm and further passes result nominal decrease in grain size and tensile properties varies accordingly. ECAP is success-fully used to develop submicron sizes in Al-2Si alloy and BIT is used effectively for evaluating mechanical prope-rties. It is found that BIT obtained results are similar to conventionally tested results.
