Abstract

The steel melting facility at ASP, Durgapur consists of a 12T and two 50 T capacity arc furnaces along with an RH degassing unit. A wide variety of alloy steel grades like stainless, tool steels, ball bearing, constructional steel etc. are melted regularly in the plant. The operating experiences in making special steels in the EAF and EAF-RH route have been highlighted in the paper in relation to various steps like charge making furnace prepa-ration, melting, oxidation, reduction, finishing & dega-ssing. The relevance of the various operating steps and the quality of input materials have been demonstrated with the help of suitable tables and figures. The steps that are being taken to improve the practice further have also been outlined. It has been concluded that it is essential to install Secondary Refining facilities so that the plant can meet the challenge of present day requirements in terms of quality and productivity.
