Abstract
Twin hearth technology has been developed with an objective of substantially improving the productivity of the open hearth furnace shops with reduced fuel and refr-actories consumption. The paper describes the principles of twin hearth process and highlights recent developments for further improving the techno-economics of the process. It also discusses the relevance of the twin hearth tech-nology under Indian conditions. It concludes that twin hearth technology is a viable alternative for modernising open hearth shops which are not too old.
