Abstract

The wasteful discard of different metallurgical wastes and by-products is an economic loss. The utilisation of metallurgical wastes is, therefore, most necessary to `beneficiate' the economics of metallurgical operations as also to obtain maximum metallic recoveries in the face of depleting mineral resources and increasingly ompetitive buyer's market. The utilisation of metallurgical wastes has generally been backward, half-heartedly undertaken in the `back yard' by the metallurgical 'back room' boys; more so, in India where the metallurgical industries have operated so far on the basis of seller's market. The general apathy towards economic utilisation of metallur-gical wastes is now lifting under the tempo of our succe-ssive Five Year Plans and in the wake of research and development work undertaken at the National Metallurgical Laboratory. In the same context, the Symposium on 'Utili-sation of metallurgical wastes' recently organized by the National Metallurgical Laboratory was most opportune and equally significant in many ways.
