Abstract
An appraisal of raw materials for the blast-furnace -- THE blast-furnace operators at Jamshedpur face a pecu- liar set of problems arising from the qualities of the available raw materials. The basic problem is the high alumina content of the blast-furnace slag ; attempts to overcome it involve increases in coke and flux requirements with consequent loss of productivity. The details can be analysed completely by a set of nomograms. Turning to ore quality, a study of the varieties of ores reveals a wide divergence in reducibility. Moreover, some of the ores are prone to disintegration during handling and decrepitation by heating or exposure to carbon monoxide. Details of test results show that the quality of ores can be appraised only from a large number of different tests. Similar tests are also required for limestone. The quality of coke is best judged by ash content as fluctuations in ash present the most important problem.
