Abstract

Wear resistance of the materials is directly proportional to the hardness and strength properties. In recent years efforts have been exerted to develop silt erosion resistant materials. However much efforts have not been made to develop these materials considering impact toughness, yield stress, work hardening ability, wear and erosion resistance. Erosion resistance requires high hardness whereas cavitation resistance require high work-hardening rate. An optimum condition of strength and work-hardening rate are very much essential to the development to new materials. In the present study, efforts would be given to develop wear resistant materials with the following objectives. 1) Alloy design should be made considering the properties of 13Cr-4Ni steel as a benchmark. 2) Attempts would be made to improve the wear and erosion resistance. The methodology of the project involves 1. Melting and casting of the alloys would be carried out.2. The cast material would be solutionised and would be heat treated at various temperatures followed by air cooling or water quenching.3. Structural characterization of the cast and heat treated materials would be done using optical, scanning and transmission electron microscopy.4. Tensile properties of the cast and heat treated materials would be evaluated.5. Impact values of the cast and heat treated materials would be evaluated. 6. Wear and erosion resistance of both cast and heat treated materials would be done.7. A comparative study of the developed material with superior properties would be made with those of existing materials for their efficacious use in service.
