Abstract

The lower part of the blast furnace, known as the hearth is a crucial region in the iron making. The phenomena occurring in the hearth is extremely complicated and a direct measurement of the internal state is extremely difficult. The knowledge of internal conditions of the hearth can be estimated through mathematical modeling of the internal conditions. Since the properties of the deadman are known to affect the hearth conditions, a model describing the hearth operation with sitting and floating dead-man has been developed. The model calcul- ates the coke-bed voidage and the variation in the liquid levels of the hot metal and slag during tapping for a sitting dead-man. A method to do the same has been prop-osed for a floating dead-man. The results with appropriate graphs have been appended.
