Abstract

National Metallurgical Laboratory (NML), Jamshedpur (founded on 26 November 1950) is a constituent establishment of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, India. Over the last 60 years, the Laboratory has emerged as one of the global leaders in metallurgy and materials research back-up by substantial share of research publications in peer-reviewed journals and intellectual property products generated in metallurgical and materials science and technology. The laboratory aims at excellence in R&D in the development and delivery of right sized technologies for use in the Indian metallurgical and materials science sector. The laboratory enjoys vibrant linkages with its stakeholders. Alliances have been forged with research institutes of excellence in both India and Abroad seeking frontier and break-through innovations in minerals and metallurgical sector. It is also an ISO 9001:2008 organisation and leadership development among the young scientists and engineers have been an area of high priority. The programme of the laboratory is carried out through seven R&D Divisions, namely, (1) Mineral Processing, (2) Metal Extraction & Forming, (3) Material Science & Technology, (4) Engineering, (5) Applied Chemistry & Corrosion, and (6) Business Development & Monitoring; two Centres, namely- (1) Analytical Chemistry Centre, and (2) Information Management & Dissemination Centre; and one unit (1) Information & Communication Technology. NML is also having an extension centre at Chennai popularly known as NML Madras Centre.
