Abstract

This paper deal with almost the entire steel industry and in particular the Company with which the author is associated with i.e. The United Steel Co. Ltd., U.K. Metallurgical research in the department covers a very wide range from mild steel to the highest alloy steels and also a wide range of products from fine wire to heavy plates. There are four major steelmaking branches in the Company; the question arises as to how the work of these branches is co-ordinated with that of Research and Development Department. Each branch has its own metallurgical laboratory. These deal only with day-to-day problems, no long-term research being carried out. The main function of the Research and Development Department is to carry out research covering almost any aspects involving special techniques and long-term research. (Mr. W.E. Bardgett, Research Manager, The United Steel Co. Ltd., U.K)
