Abstract
The following parameters are generally made use of for judging the moulding characteristics of foundry sands : (i) Fineness test to determine the clay grade matter and percentage distribution of sand grains on each sieve ; (ii) microscopic examination to determine grain shape and surface texture ; (iii) petrographic examination to ascertain the presence of various minerals and the quartz content of the sample ; (iv) chemical analysis before and/ or after washing off the clay grade matter ; (v) moulding characteristics ; and (vi) casting characteristics.
