Abstract
Electron beam melting is one of the recent useful and versatile melting tools available to metallurgists and this method of melting is finding increasing application in different areas of metallurgists research. Electron beam melting has certain advantages over other types of vaccum melting and though it was initially used for melting refractory metals, it is now being increasingly used for melting metals and alloys of lower melting points where purity is an important criterion, as it is capable of melting with least contamination compared to other methods of vaccum melting. A certain degree of purification has also been claimed during melting with electron beam. In this paper melting of buttons of different metals and alloys in a 7.5 kw, BARC electron beam melting furnace has been dealt with.
