Abstract

The graphite clay sample, received from the Ganacharpur Graphite Mines, Kolar, Mysore for beneficiation tests, assayed that 12.08% C, 80.66% ash, and 7.26% volatile matter plus moisture. The gangue minerals present in the sample were quartz, muscovite mica, ochre, clay and a few grains of tourmaline. The graphite was found to be intimately associated with the gangue minerals even at -200 mesh and therefore, a high grade of graphite concentrate could not be obtained by flotation methods. A concentrate obtained after one reflotation assayed only 46.42% C (with 3.0% C recovery) indicating that it was not possible to produce even a foundry grade graphite from the sample.
