Abstract
Carbon has come to be considered an ideal refractory in some metallurgical operations. It is neutral in character, has a melting point above 3000° c, is not wetted by slags and molten metals and has a relatively high thermal and electrical conductivity. Carbon refractories also are lighter than the alumina-silicate and basic refractories (bulk density 1.5- 1.6 gms/c.c compared to 2.1-3.0 gms/c.c) and do not creep under load at high temperatures.
