Abstract

Thermal Dehydroxylation of Bayer’s alumina has been studied by D.T.A., thermogravimetry, microscopy and x-ray with a view to understand the mechanism involved. Giving due consideration to the mechanisms suggested by previous workers and based on the experimental observations made in this study, it is suggested that aluminium tri-hydrate (gibbsite)breaks up in the first instance to mono and dehydrates which subsequently transform to α-Alumina through a series of intermediate phases which can be represented as follows:
Al2O3.3H2O (Gibbsite )→xAl2O3.2H2O(Dihydrate)→ γ-Al2O3 → β-Al2O3→ α Al2O3 →
→ Al2O3.2H2O(Boemite)→ - δ -Al2O3 → -Al2O3 → θ-Al2O3→
