Abstract

With the growth and development of the permanent magnet industry and the increased and the interest in permanent magnet research, the need in India for work in that direction has been briefly stressed. The major types of permanent magnet materials has been classed up into 3 groups viz. carbide hardening, dispersion hardening and miscellaneous, and the various alloys under each group has been discussed in some detail. Reference has also been made to the various requirements demanded of permanent magnet materials, methods of stabilishing and handling them general methods of magnetizing and demagnetizing and to the methods of testing magnetic materials and finished magnets. The characteristics which make permanent magnets so versatile in their application and their application ranging from a playing toy, cooling fan, entertaining radio, luxurious auto-partially listed. Finally the urgent and imperative need for intensified research in this direction for intensified research in this direction for the production of cheap and powerful magnets using materials entirely of indigenous origin has been stressed in view of the strategic importance of this material, the need for self sufficiency, the lack of supplies of nickel and cobalt within our borders and the consequent need to find suitable and efficient substitutes.
