Abstract
Assam coal is a good quality coking coal due to its low ash content( < 8 %) and is having very good caking property. However, it finds restricted industrial utilisation due to its high sulphur content (3-7%). Earlier studies on desulphurisation of Assam coal were confined to laboratory scale only, and practically no attempt was made in improving its industrial utilisation rather than using it as domestic fuel. In the present study, using coke oven gas as the source of hydrogen, desulphurisation of Assam coal has been carried out. Coke oven gas contains 55-57% hydrogen that can reduce sulphur present in coal at elevated temperature. The experiments have been carried out at temperatures ranging from 400-700 deg C for different retention time. The extent of sulphur removal observed in the treatment of coal with coke oven gas is up to 78.1%. It has been found that after desulphurisation this coal can be used to make metallurgical coke by blending with good quality low sulphur coal.
