Abstract
EARLY IN 1962 the Durgapur Chapter of the Indian Insti- tute of Metals held a symposium entitled 'Ironmaking
in India'. The author con:ributed a paper, and as the proceedings of the symposium have not yet been published
some of that paper is reproduced here.
Based on known Indian raw materials analyses and
typical blast-furnace operation, an attempt was made to
predict the effects of deterioration of ore, sintering fines, etc. on the furnace performance. This type of calculation is now extended to include the effects of
coke with different ash content, oil injection, changes
in slag basicity etc. To make these calculations, many assumptions have to be made on the relationships between cause and effect. These are arguable in detail but it is believed that the resulting predictions constitute a useful basis for detailed assessment.
