Abstract

At the outset, a brief review is made of the global steel situation and the future steelmaking trends. Some impo-rtant developments in the steelmaking area are high-lighted. Attention is focussed on basic oxygen steel-making, both top-blown and bottom-blown processes and the recent innovations in combined blowing techniques. The design features of converters, vessel suspension and drive systems are discussed. Recent developments in electric are furnaces such as water-cooled walls and roof, and bottom-pouring furnace are presented. The role of continuous casting including recent developments and the relevance of ladle metallurgy even for tonnage steel production are emp-hasised. The impact of these developments on steel plant design and layout is brought out. Finally, some salient aspects of project engineering are discussed.
