Abstract

Endeavour for research in the field of metallurgy for import substitution and related subjects has assumed great national significance in the planned Industrial progress of the country. Metallurgical Industries in India, both in Public and private sectors, have their share of problems and difficulties, emanating mainly from the acute foreign exchange crisis and scarcity of imported raw materials. The sense of urgency that the Import substitution programme assumes at present for taking us towards our cherished goal of self-sufficiency and self-reliance, places added responsibility on institutions engaged in metallurgical research. The performance of National Metall-urgical Laboratory is by no means small from this stand-point. Many of its research studies including research on development of substitute materials are available for commercial exploitation and some are being implemented on commercial scale: The National Metallurgical Laboratory will be happy to place these processes before the inter-ested industries apart from taking up their problems on raw materials, production technique, process control, etc.
