Abstract

The present century has seen the phenomenal growth of light metals and their multitude alloys for a wide range of service conditions. Increasing speicalisation in high duty applications in this jet and supersonic age calls upon the metallurgical "back-room" boys to turn out new constructional materials as expeditiously & economically
as possible. The Second World War in its train gave a tremendous stimulus to the development of light metals & their alloys both in production output and range of
service requirements. In the case of India, if the hard core of the Second Five Year Plan has centred round the development of the iron & steel industry, the industrial growth of the light metals and their alloys may claim the place of pride during the Third Five Year Plan now emer-ging from its embryonic stage.
