Abstract

Fretting corrosion is one of the main sources of failure in hip and knee joints made of titanium and its alloys. Surface modification of CP-Ti by thermal oxidation, anodization and electrodeposition of hydroxyl apatite coating are some viable approach to improve the fretting corrosion resistance of CP-Ti. The present study aims to evaluate the fretting corrosion behaviour of surface modified CP-Ti and identify merits and limitations of these treatments. Understanding the fretting corrosion behaviour of surface modified CP-Ti is an important challenge not only for the medial professionals who perform the surgery but also for the scientists and engineers who are involved in design and development of the prosthetic devices.
