Abstract

IT is now generally accepted that hydrogen is largely responsible for a number of harmful phenomena in alloy steels, four of the most important being:

(1) 'Wild' heats and blowhole formation,
(2) Embrittlement,
(3) Hairline cracks,
(4) Hardzone cracking during welding.
The present paper will deal only with the
first three of these and particularly with hairline
cracks.
