Abstract

Sponge iron is becoming increasingly important, as a charge not only for the steel industry, but also for iron foundries, particularly due to its chemical composition, price and availability. Sponge iron is characterised by high degree of metallization, a low gangue content and very low levels of undesirable tramp elements. Therefore, it is particularly well suited for the production of cast iron, even ductile and SG iron, which has to meet high quality requirements. Additionally Indian foundries are facing the shortage of foundry grade pig iron in the market. In view of this, it was pertinent to investigate the utilisation of sponge iron as a part or substitute of pig iron in the cupola melting practice.
