Abstract

With increasing use of residual fuel oils and low-grade coals in boilers and gas turbines the problem of corrosion of metals and alloys due to the deposition of fuel ash on the gas side of boilers and gas turbines has gained importance. In this paper some results on the theoretical consideration of oil ash corrosion based on data obtained with nickel-free austenitic stainless steel, Cr/Ni stainless steel and inconel have been discussed. Corrosion characteristics were studied in oxygen atmosphere at different temperatures with vanadium-sodium slags of varying compositions. The intensity of corrosion was found to depend on temperature, slag composition and type of metal. Compared to Cr/Ni stainless steel, inconel and nickel-free stainless steel were found to possess a high resistance to corrosion specially at temperatures above 820°C. (Mr. H.R.
