Abstract

The effect of various factors controlling protective film formation on aluminium and copper alloys by treatment in acid chromate solution has been described. Studies on aluminium in chromate fluoride type of bath have indicated that the weight of film formed changes in a way similar to that of zinc. The film formed was in general dependent on conditions of treatment. For copper and copper alloys, the film formed was in general strongly protective though its resistance against attack was dependent on conditions of treatment. For copper and copper alloys, the film formed in chromate/chromic acid bath was found to be more protective than in chromate/sulphuric acid/chloride bath. (Messrs S.
