Abstract

Research and development work have been undertaken at the National Metallurgical Laboratory to produce low residual iron for use as the basic raw material in the manufacture of special irons, alloy steels and super alloys, and also for use as soft magnetic material. Specialised refining technique has been developed at the National Metallurgical Laboratory for the production of low residual iron employing mild steel scrap as the main raw material, conforming to composition range of C%-0.03 max. S%-0.01-0.02; P%-0.004-0.018; Si%-0.01-0.12; Mn% trace-0.11 and Al% trace-0.21. (Messrs R.D. Gupta, P.K. Gupte and Dr. B.R. Nijhawan, National Metallurgical Laboratory)
