Abstract

Failure of rolling mill rolls is a serious problem in the metal working industry, not only due to high costs of rolls but also due to hold-up in production caused by a roll failure. A case of failure of a work-roll used in cold rolling of steel was investigated. The paper describes various tests carried out. It appeared from the investigation that high hydrogen content (possibly due to pick-up of hydrogen from soluble oil used during rolling) and imbalance of residual stresses contributed to the failure of the roll.
