Abstract

A low grade manganese ore from Kurro-Madi Mines, Jabalpur district, Madhya Pradesh, assaying Mn 33.5;Fe 9.6;SiO2 19.5; Al2O3 5.8 and P. 0.175 percent was received from M/s. Karnidanji Dhadiwal, Nagpur. The ore was very fine grained and dense in character and had a shaly appearance. Psilomelane was the chief manganese mineral followed by pyrolusite and braunite. The chief gangue minerals were quartz and hematite, the former being very intimately disseminated in the ore. Flotation tests using fatty acid and cationic reagent did not give results even with very finely-ground feed. Reduction roast followed by magnetic separation yielded a manganese concentrate low in iron but high in silica. The silica content could not be appreciably reduced by flotation.
