Abstract

Five low grade ferruginous manganese ore samples were investigated on Semi-Pilot Plant scale to determine their amenability to concentration employing straight magnetic separation with or without prior heating, employing the process, patented by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (Indian Patent No. 51625). This process can often yield good results with specific mineralogical composition of an ore but is quite sensitive, as slight changes in mineralogical composition will affect the efficiency of beneficiation. Only where hematite or goethite was the principal ferruginous gangue mineral present in the ore, selective separation of same from manganese minerals was found possible by magnetic methods. The samples from Joda (Orissa) and Nagri-Joda, (Mysore0, were found not amenable to this process. Metallurgical grade of concentrates with fairly high manganese recoveries, could however, be obtained from the samples from Kuttinga and Rairakhol in Orissa and Kumsi in Mysore.
