Abstract

A Sample of low grade manganese dioxide ore from Amritapura in Chitaldroog District, Mysore was received from M/s. Devidayal (Sales) Private Ltd. assayed 29.87% Mn, 46.62% XnO2, 6.86% Fe, 35.45% SiO2, 3.80% Al2O3, 0.08% P,1.12% alkalies and 0.33% BaO. Pyrolusite was the chief manganese mineral while quartz was the predominant gangue. The other gangue minerals were goethite, muscovite, feldspar, garnet and biotite. Tabling of the sample gave a good grade of concentrates but the recovery was only 23.5%. Flotation employing fatty acid at a pH of 10.0 yielded satisfactory results. A concentrate assaying 55.11% Mn (containing 86.36% MnO2) could be obtained with a recovery of 60.9% Mn.
