Abstract

This investigation was undertaken on behalf of M/s Chittaranjan Locomotive Works, to investigate the suitability of Oyaria sand for use in their foundries at Chittaranjan. About 2 cwts of the sample were received for investigation. Oyaria sand is naturally occurring moulding sand obtained from the village Oyaria in the district of Burdwan, West Bengal. According to Geological Survey of India, the deposits are of Pleistocene and recent origin. As received, the sample contained extensive gritty material of mostly quartz. The sample was sifted through a 15 mesh sieve in the first instance and that part of the sample which passed through the sieve was taken for purposes of investigation.
