Abstract

The trends in the chemical reduction and dissociation reaction for the production of titanium metals have been surveyed. The chemistry of titanium salts like oxides, sulphides, halides, hydrides etc. has been briefly mentioned. The possibilities and problems involved in the reduction of oxides and halides have been fully discussed and the merits and demerits of Kroll’s process using manganese have been pointed out. The reduction of titanium tetrachloride by sodium has been discussed. The paper deals with the problems yet to be solved for the reduction of oxides. The vapour-phase reaction of magnesium and titanium tetrachloride offers interesting possibilities and its merits and demerits have been discussed. The dissociation reactions for the production of titanium have been discussed.
