Abstract

The optimum conditions for the production of Sorel cement for use as a chemical bond for basic refractories have been studied using Salem and Mysore magnesites and commercial magnesium chloride and magnesium sulphate. The atmospheric temperature and humidity were found to effect the setting time of the cement to a greater extent than even the mixing ratio of the different ingredients. Oxy-chloride compositions gave stronger cements than oxy-sulphate when treated similarly. While a higher strength of MgCl2 solution gave better compressive strength; a higher percentage of caustic MgO gave better tensile and flexural strength.
