Abstract

A new technique for the preparation of titanium tetra-iodide has been worked out. The method consists in heating aluminium, iodine and titanium dioxide in a sealed evacuated glass vessel, the reaction being carried out at 400°- C. The reaction does not go to completion and only 50-60 percent titanium dioxide reacts out with moisture-free carbon disulphide and filtered. Any residual aluminium tri-iodide is complexed with potassium iodide and the solution distilled. After the iodine and carbon disulphide have been removed, the temperature is raised to 400-450° C when pure titanium tetra iodide distils off and is condensed. The effect of various factors such as the temperature and duration of reaction, size of vessel and the quantities of reactants have been studied.
