Abstract
Manganese is essential for the manufacture of steel. Thirteen lbs of manganese are necessary for the production of 1 ton of steel. It accts mainly as a desulphurisor and deoxidiser in steel making. It is added to steel in various forms of manganese alloys such as different grades of ferro-manganese, spigeleison and silico-manganese. With the commercial production of electrolytic manganese in the United States, extensive trials have been made to determine how far can electrolytic manganese replace different grades of manganese ferro-alloys used in steel manufacture. The sale price of the electrolytic manganese as produced commercially in America by Electro-manganese Corporation, Knoxville and Electrometallurgical Co., Maritta, only producers of electrolytic manganese in the World, is still very high in comparison with the manganese ferro-alloys.
