Abstract

A low grade chromite from Nausahi, Keonjhar District, assaying 42.52% Cr2O3, 16.62% FeO, 7.98% Al2O3, 15.44% MgO, 14.24% SiO2 and 0.051% P was beneficiated in this laboratory. Talc and serpentine were the principal gangue minerals. Straight tabling the sample at -65 mesh produced a concentrate assaying 55.4% Cr2O3 and 19.47% FeO (Cr/Fe ratio 2.5) with a recovery of 91.7%Cr2O3. Magnetic separation and flotation tests also yielded similar grade of chromite concentrates with high recoveries, but since the iron was chemical combined, the Cr: Fe ratio itself could not be increased to make it suitable for metallurgical use by ore-dressing methods.
