Abstract

A low grade chrome ore from Mysore, assaying 36.74% Cr2O3, 22.93% FeO, 15.47% MgO,0.65% CaO, 12.36% SiO2 and 6.22% Al2O3 was received from the Bureau of Mineral Development, Government of Mysore, for beneficiation tests. Magnesite and serpentine were the major gangue minerals. Tabling of -48 mesh sample gave a concentrate assaying 50.76% Cr2O3 and 29.25% FeO with a chromite recovery of 58.4%. The recovery would improve to 88.3% by mixing a middling product, in which case the grade of concentrate would be 48.84% Cr2O3 with 28.12% FeO. The Cr to Fe ratio could not be increased to make it suitable for metallurgical use, as the Fe was in chemical combination in the chromite.
