Abstract

The applications of iron powder for cutting and flame scaring of massive steel castings particularly alloy steel and stainless steel castings are progressively increasing, employing specially designed cutting nozzles. Fine iron powder of optimum size range is injected through a special nozzle with air under pressure along with oxygen and acetylene. The iron powder instantly burns in the current of oxygen producing a high temperature at the point of impingement, while the molten slag formed by the combination of iron powder the during the cutting and scarfing of highly alloyed steel castings; Such jet injection of iron powder possesses the additional advantage of mechanically scavenging the slag and automatically exposing a fresh metallic surface for cutting.
