Abstract

A sample of low grade ferruginous manganese ore from Sagur, Orissa, received from Messrs. Mitra (India) Ltd., Calcutta, for beneficiation tests assayed 29.06% Mn, 17.98% Fe, 1.78% SiO2, and 0.052% P. The chief manganese minerals were psilomelane, pyrolusite and was associated mainly with ferruginous lateritic. Attrition grinding and desliming of the ore before reduction roast gave concentrates assaying between 53.4 and 52.2 percent in with recoveries between 26.8 and 42.5 percent and with Mn:Fe ratios between 9.9:1 and 6:1. In these tests the sample was given a reduction roast between 500-560° C followed by magnetic separation of the roasted product. The low manganese recoveries were due to intimate association of the manganese and ferruginous minerals.
