Abstract

Beneficiation of a ferruginous chromite from Orissa assaying 41.4% Cr2O3, 34.2% FeO,8.6% MgO, 7.9% Al2O3, 1.2% SiO2 was studied, using a magnetising reduction roast process for the elimination of limonite ochre which was the principal gangue in the ore. Reduction of the ore at 500-560° C using Tisco coke oven gas , followed by crushing and magnetic separation yielded a non-magnetic chromatic concentrate which had a chromium-iron ration of 3.0:1.0 would be an acceptable raw material for the production of standard ferro-chrome.
