Abstract

Study of the nature of the corrosion product, scales or electroplate often depends on the removal of these completely and uncontaminated, with the least damage to the parent metal. For instance, corroded specimens that are to be used for weight loss determinations must be very thoroughly cleaned without loss of any sound metal, and this is specially important in cases where the corrosion test has produced only a small weight loss. In the study of the high temperature oxidation scaling, complete and an uncontaminated removal is essential, especially when the chemical analysis of the scales is desired. Again in the chemical or X-ray study of electroplates, these have to be removed without removing any of the base metal. All these special considerations call for a special stripping technique.
