Abstract

Methods exist for the preparation of lower oxides or the metal by the decomposition of the salts like oxalates and formats. The paper records attempts in preparing titanium oxalates with a view to study the possibilities of getting the metal or lower oxides by its decomposition. In an attempt to prepare titanium oxalate by the reaction of titanium hydroxide and oxalic acid has been found from conductivity measurements that only titanyl oxalate and not titanium oxalate is formed. Potentiometric titrations indicate the hydrolysis of titanyl oxalate solution which is stabilised by further addition of oxalic acid .It has further been found that the addition of absolute alcohol to the solution stabilized with excess oxalic acid separates out titanyl oxalate. The effects of various factors like volume, temperature of heating, presence of excess oxalic acid, etc. in the solution on the precipitation of titanyl oxalate by absolute alcohol have also been recorded.
