Abstract

Ultra High Carbon Steel (1-2% C) was thermomechanically processed to obtain a duplex structure consisting of ultra fine cementite particles in fine grained ferrite. The processing parameters have been optimised on the basis of laboratory simulative tests. Steel so treated exhibits a good combination of strength and ductility along with high superplastic elongation. Best properties were obtained where the spheroids were below 0.25 mu in size uniformly distributed in fine grained (1 mu) ferrite matrix.
