Abstract

A survey of cast iron foundries under the catagory of small scale industries at Howrah reveals that a river sand popularly known as Mundeswari River sand is being widely used. So far no systematic study is reported to have been carried out on this sand to determine its suitability for foundry use. Extensive investigation was therefore undertaken by the NML Foundry Station, Howrah to assess the moulding properties of this Sand. M/s, Howrah Builders Corporation, Belgachia, Howrah kindly agreed to supply this Foundry Station with the required amount of sand sample for carrying out the investigation. The sample was reported to have been collected from the Mundeswari river bed at Harinkhola near Arambagh in the District of Hooghly, West Bengal. The sand was brown in colour in as-received condition.
