Abstract

A survey of cast iron foundries under the catagory of small scall industries at Howrah reveals that a typical moulding sand locally known as Ichhanagari sand is widely used. So far no systematic study has been reported to have been carried out on this sand to determine its suitability for foundry use.Extensive investigation was therefore undertaken by the NML Foundry Station, Howrah, to assess the moulding properties of this sand. M/s. Howrah Builders Corporation, Belgachia, Howrah agreed to supply this Foundry Station with required amount of sand sample for carrying out the investigation. The sample is reported, to have been collected from Ichhanagar which is near the border of Howrah Hooghly District of West Bengal. The sand was Yellowish-brown in colour in as received condition.
